At Distant Illusions (“we,” “us,” or “our”), we believe that your personal information is none of our business, unless it's necessary to provide our services (“Services”) and make better products. We generate revenue by selling games, not by exploiting your personal information.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share (“process”) your personal information when you use our Services, including when you visit our website at distantillusions.com or engage with us in other related ways.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at contact@distantillusions.com.

How Do We Collect Your Information and What Type Of Information Do We Collect?

  • Account Registration: As a part of the process of registration on our website, we collect your email address, username, and IP address to ensure the proper functioning of your account.
  • Mailing List: We collect your email address to send updates. You can unsubscribe at any time via the provided link in each email or by contacting us via contact@distantillusions.com.
  • Game Usage Data: When you launch one of our games, we may collect anonymized data, such as your CPU and GPU model and playtime, to improve our game engine and monitor demand. With your consent, of course.
  • Customer Support: If you contact us, we may process your email address and any additional personal data you provide. Please avoid sharing unnecessary sensitive information.

We do not process sensitive information. We use third-party payment providers (e.g., PayPal, itch.io, Steam) and do not process your payment details ourselves.

All personal information you provide must be true, complete, and accurate. You must notify us of any changes to such information.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR, we process your personal information based on the following legal bases:

  • Consent: We may process your information if you have given us permission to use it for a specific purpose. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legal Obligations: We may process your information to comply with legal obligations, cooperate with law enforcement, or disclose information as required by law.
  • Legitimate Interests: We may process your information when it is necessary for our legitimate business interests, provided that these interests are not overridden by your rights and freedoms. This includes activities such as improving our Services, fraud prevention, and securing our systems.
  • Vital Interests: We may process your information to protect the safety of individuals.

In some rare cases, we may process your information without consent under applicable law, such as for investigations, fraud detection, or business transactions.

Who Has Access to Your Data?

We do not sell your personal data, nor do we share it with unauthorized third parties for marketing purposes. We may share your data with third parties only when required by law or necessary to deliver our Services.

Our service providers, who process your data for specific purposes, include:

  • Cloud storage and communication tools (e.g., GitHub, Discord)
  • Hosting providers (e.g., DigitalOcean)
  • Payment providers (e.g., PayPal, itch.io, Steam)
  • Potential external partners such as accounting, legal services, and our development team

We may share your personal information in case of business transfers, including mergers, acquisitions, or sales of company assets. (Not that we plan to do that anytime soon.)

Is Your Information Transferred Internationally?

Our server(s) are currently located in Germany. If you access our Services from outside Germany, your information may be transferred, stored, and processed in other countries, including Finland and Turkey.

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), or Switzerland, be aware that data protection laws in these countries may differ from those in your country. However, we will take necessary steps to protect your personal information.

How Long Do We Keep Your Information?

We will retain your personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice, unless required by law to retain it longer. When there is no ongoing legitimate business need to process your information, we will delete or anonymize it. Data storage is not free, and we aren't exactly swimming in money.

How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee that unauthorized third parties will not access your information. You are responsible for ensuring that you access our Services in a secure environment.

Do We Use Cookies and Other Tracking Technologies?

We may use cookies and similar technologies (e.g., web beacons, pixels) to collect information when you interact with our Services. These technologies help us assist with basic site functions. For more details, please refer to our Cookie Policy.

What Are Your Privacy Rights?

In certain regions (EEA, UK, Switzerland, Canada), you have the right to:

  • Request access to your personal information and details about its processing.
  • Request correction or deletion of your personal information and be notified of such changes.
  • Request restriction of processing and be notified when restrictions are applied.
  • Exercise your right to data portability.
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests or automated decision-making.
  • Withdraw your consent at any time if processing is based on consent.

You can exercise these rights by contacting us at contact@distantillusions.com. If you are in the EEA or UK and not satisfied with the way we have dealt with your request, you have the right to file a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Controls for Do-Not-Track Features

Most browsers include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature that signals your preference to not have your browsing activity tracked. We currently do not respond to DNT signals, as we do not track you in the first place, and no uniform standard for such signals has been established.

Our goal is to provide you with interesting and useful content tailored to your interests and preferences, keeping you informed about our Services you currently use or may find beneficial in the future.

  • We will be sending our newsletter in reasonable intervals to keep you engaged and make you curious, without overwhelming your inbox.

Children Under the Age of 13

Our Services are not intended for children under 13 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected or received personal information from a child under 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information.

To make such requests, please contact us at contact@distantillusions.com. We cannot delete all of your personal information except by also deleting your user account. We may not accommodate a request to change information if we believe the change would violate any law or legal requirement or cause the information to be incorrect.

Do We Make Updates to This Policy?

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any significant changes will be posted on this page, and the revision date at the top will be updated accordingly. You are responsible for periodically visiting this policy to check for any changes.
